Seychelles

The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands located in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar and about 1,000 miles east of Kenya, Africa. Seychelles has a population of about 86,000. Victoria the capital city is located on Mahe the largest island at only 17 miles long and 5 mile wide.

Mahe is a mountainous island with lush tropical vegetation.

We saw many beautiful tropical flowers.

Unique to the Seychelles is the Coco de Mer palm. The coconut from the Coco de Mer is the largest seed in the world, about the size of a basketball and weighing up to 48 pounds.

Also found in the Seychelles is the Aldabra Giant Tortoise. With a natural population of around 100,000 there are more than 10 times as many giant tortoises here than in the Galapagos.

We saw fruit bats hangings in the trees and flying about.

Tea is grown on a plantation in the mountains.

We visited a local tea factory.

We sampled some lemon grass tea.

Tropical fruit and fish are abundant on the island.

But most extraordinary were the beautiful clear turquoise waters and white sand beaches.

We enjoyed our time in this tropical paradise.
