Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean about 1,200 miles off the southeast coast of Africa and east of Madagascar.  It encompasses several minor islands yet the total land mass is only 787 square miles (about twice the area inside of Atlanta's I-285 perimeter.

The capital and largest city is Port Louis with a population of 137,000.

Mauritius was created by volcanic activity some 8 million years ago, however it is considered inactive now, not having had any eruptions in over 100,000 years.

Many of its mountains still have a volcanic peak structure.

One curiosity of its volcanic creation is this area of multi-colored earth resulting from the decomposition of various minerals contained in the soil.

Hinduism is the predominate religion.  This is a holy lake where the faithful make an annual pilgrimage.

There were many unusual and colorful statues of various Hindu Gods.

Mauritius is known for its model ship building.  They produce highly detailed scale replicas of many famous and important ships of the past.

We visited a workshop to see the process.  Plans from the actual ships being modeled are used to ensure accuracy.

This was the last stop for our Costa cruise.

Next destination on this trip Madagascar.
